Most people tend to form an opinion about you in the first
few seconds of their meeting with you. Although it is true that a major part of
it is due to your body language, i.e. how you greeted “hello” your handshake,
the stance when you stand, etc. but what you wear is no less important in determining
their decision of you. This is why you must learn about how to dress for an
interview so that the first good impression that the employer has of you is the
one that lasts.
The thumb rule about choosing your clothes when deciding
what to wear for an interview should be to dress one step ahead of what you are
expected to wear. In other words, men should go for full dark suit with white
shirt instead of coordinates. In case of women, either skirt suit or pants suit
would do. You should bear in mind that the dress should look professional and
yet be comfortable.
There is a difference between comfortable and “comfy” which
you should not forget. The latter implies being sloppy about dressing which may
be taken to be too relaxed an attitude to be any good for the job.
Moreover, your
soul searching on how to
dress for an interview should not end with the dress alone. You need to
take care of your accessories too, in particular shoes. It is fitting for an
interview if men wear clean black formal leather shoes that go with the rest of
their attire. Women should stick to low heels and closed toes. Never make the
mistake of wearing sports or tennis shoes to an interview.
